Should I get wedding Insurance?

Your wedding will quite probably be the most expensive event that you ever hold. It is an enormous investment of both time and money in order to achieve a day that will be remembered fondly for the rest of your life. But accidents do happen and things can go wrong. For 99.9% of you everything will go fantastically well, but what if you are one of that 0.1%? If you have wedding insurance it could turn a potential disaster into little more than an inconvenience.

If you break your leg the week before your wedding, a really good insurance policy could pay out enough for you to postpone the event and book everything for a later date. If your musicians find they cannot make the wedding due to illness, a decent insurance policy could cover the significantly increased costs of hiring an alternative at the last minute.

As with all legal documents, it is important to read the small print. When choosing a wedding insurance policy, be sure to compare the terms and conditions and levels of cover offered, as not all policies are equal. Wedding insurance typically varies in cost from around £50, all the way up to £300 or so. This large range of prices corresponds to the varying levels of cover offered by each policy. One of the key differences between the budget options and their high-end counterparts is that the more expensive policies should cover the entire cost of your wedding in the event that you are forced to cancel, whereas cheaper alternative will probably only cover some of the cost.

The key factor when deciding on the level of cover you require, or indeed whether insurance would even be worthwhile, is the total amount that you are spending on your wedding day. It might not be necessary to insure a registry office wedding at all. A small wedding might be adequately covered by a policy that could only pay out a maximum of £9000 in the event of a cancellation. For a more extravagant wedding it would certainly be unwise to go for anything but a higher-end insurance policy, able to cover all costs, should cancellation become necessary.
