Choosing a Wedding Videographer

Almost every couple hires a wedding photographer, but despite videography becoming increasingly common at weddings, it is not yet the norm. However skilled your photographer may be, he cannot capture the emotion in your voices as you recite your vows, the laughter that fills the room during the speeches, or the way you move during your first dance. For these events videography is paramount.

On a videographer's website you may be able to view short clips from various weddings, but bear in mind that these will be the very best examples of their work. While these clips can help you rule out some videographers, really you need to see an example of a whole wedding. If, for whatever reason, it is not possible for you to visit the videographer, or for them to visit you, ask for a sample DVD of a previous wedding to be sent to you. Make sure you watch it all the way through, then consider whether it is of consistent high quality.

Wherever possible, endeavour to actually meet with any videographer that makes it to your short list. You need to ensure that there's a good rapport between the three of you. It's no good if they're going to make you feel uncomfortable on your big day. They need to be a pretty skilled 'people person' to deal with all the wedding guests and get the best possible footage out of the day.

On some videographer's websites you may see talk of 'future proofing your wedding video'. While you may not yet have a high-def TV, let alone a high-def Blu-Ray player, mark my words, one day you will! So getting your wedding filmed in High Definition will be worthwhile even if you are initially only going to have copies on DVD. If your special day was filmed in High Def, then it can always be re-cut for Blu-Ray at a later date (providing you discuss this with your videographer). Almost every videographer should now be filming in widescreen, but it's worth making sure that this is the case with any videographer that you are considering.

Make sure to think about how you would like your videographer to approach the ceremony itself. If you feel that you don't want a videographer moving around the room throughout your vows, discuss this with them beforehand!
